Über geekiness

by on Jul.19, 2010, under Nørd

IT Crowd – Serien

Ubuntu Installer for Windows – WUBI

by on May.11, 2009, under

(Geez what an acronym :) )

Being a sysadmin, I play with different operating systems in my spare time, while I find it fun to acquire new knowledge in my professional area. I mainly use Windows since it provides me with the possibility to play games, which Linux still is having a hard time doing. Today I was searching google, looking for a way to boot up Ubuntu on Windows 7 VHD, and found a really nice little tool.It enables you to install Ubuntu on your Windows, like any other application, and boot up from Ubuntu when Windows boots. Like any other application you can uninstall it, and it is gone from your computer. This means, no hassle with different boot loaders on your hard drive, and hence no risk of damaging your Windows partition.

All you need to do is get Wubi. Download Ubuntu, and mount Ubuntu with i.e. Virtual CloneDrive from SlySoft and your good to go.It installs Ubuntu, allowing you to specify how much space it should occupy on your Windows partition hard-drive, and asks you to restart your computer. Do that and select Ubuntu just after POST.

It is a great way to try out Ubuntu, without the hassle of wiping a whole hard-drive, try it :)
